Community Action Center and Whitman County Food Coalition are developing two initiatives to address hunger on the Palouse: (1) an in-depth regional food security assessment; and (2) farm-to-food bank programs. The first year AmeriCorps VISTA member would assist in conducting a regional food security assessment to uncover food system gaps and needs as well as discovering assets and strengths already present in the low-income community. The project will empower the low-income community to “discover, dream, and design” food security solutions. The VISTA will organize community visioning sessions in 13 low income communities, and analyze current rural food pantry capacity.

Rotary First Harvest’s Harvest Against Hunger acts as a program incubator and catalyst, utilizing a team of AmeriCorps VISTA to build sustainable gleaning and produce recovery programs to increase fresh produce in the hunger relief system. This includes coordinating volunteer groups to glean and harvest produce, addressing issues and challenges related to supply chain management – like the transportation and distribution of gleaned produce.
